Mambajao in Camiguin became a municipality, two days after it was separated from the municipality of Catarman. The name was from the Visayan term “mamahaw,” meaning to usher breakfast and “bajao,” which is leftover boiled rice. In the early 1900s, Mambajao prospered to become the busiest port in Northern Mindanao. Mambajao occupies a total land area of 10,483 hectares. The municipality ranks first in terms of land area and population among the five towns comprising the province of Camiguin. Mambajao, based on the 2020 Census, has a total population of 41,094.
